ONDERNEEMING WATER TREATMENT PLANT NEARS COMPLETION, EXPECTED TO SERVE AN ADDITIONAL 30,000 RESIDENTS
Residents of Onderneeming and its surrounding areas are set to benefit from a reliable supply of treated water with the nearing completion of the Onderneeming Water Treatment Plant which is financed through the Coastal Water Treatment Infrastructure Programme (CWTIP). Constructed by Toshiba Water Solutions, the state-of-the-art facility is currently undergoing its final stages of pressure testing and is on track for commissioning in December.
The plant features advanced technology to ensure the provision of high-quality water to residents. Present is a hypochlorite generator which is an electro-chlorination unit which converts salt solution (brine) into liquid bleach (Sodium hypochlorite) for the purpose of water treatment. This system was procured from the Indian company, Pristine Waters. To further complement its operations, there is already one existing well serving the facility, with two additional wells currently being drilled. Plans are also in place to drill a third well, significantly boosting the plant's capacity to meet the region's growing demand for potable water. Once all four wells are in operation, it seeks to benefit an additional 30,000 residents supplying from Supenaam to Taymouth Manor and a much-needed added boost to the input capacity of the plant.
GWI CEO Mr. Shaik Baksh recently toured the newly constructed water treatment plant and expressed enthusiasm for the positive impact this project will have on the community. "This facility marks a critical step in improving water quality and access for residents of Onderneeming and surrounding areas. We are committed to delivering on our promise of safe and sustainable water services for all," Mr. Baksh stated.
Residents can look forward to an improved quality of life with the introduction of treated water, which enhances health and sanitation standards while meeting modern water quality benchmarks.
The Onderneeming Water Treatment Plant reflects GWI's ongoing commitment to delivering sustainable water solutions, in alignment with Guyana’s broader developmental goals.
