Guyana Water Incorporated's (GWI) Water Quality Laboratory has once again demonstrated its commitment to maintaining high standards in water quality testing, having successfully received re-certification under the GYS 170:2021 Standard from the Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS).
The certification, presented on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, confirms that the laboratory continues to satisfy the General Requirements for the Operation of a Laboratory, following a comprehensive audit conducted in September 2026.
The assessment examined the effectiveness of the laboratory's quality management systems.
During a simple ceremony at GNBS, Laboratory Manager, Ms. Angela Fordyce, and Laboratory Quality Officer, Ms. Crystal Wall, received the certificate and commemorative plaque on behalf of GWI.
The laboratory has maintained certification since 2018, reflecting eight years of continued efforts to uphold established quality management standards in its operations.
Speaking at the ceremony, Ms. Fordyce expressed appreciation to the GNBS team for its thorough evaluation process, emphasising the importance of rigorous quality monitoring in ensuring that the Water Quality Department effectively fulfils its mandate.
"We are extremely excited to receive our re-certification. This just shows that we have been consistent, and I want to thank our team because they have put in the work and the effort and it shows. This shows that other organisations and entities can trust our results," she stated.
Maintaining certification requires consistent attention to laboratory procedures, documentation, quality control and the reliability of testing results.
She credited the laboratory team for its dedication to meeting these requirements, highlighting that the achievement reflects the collective effort involved in maintaining the laboratory's quality management systems.
The GYS 170:2021 Standard establishes requirements for laboratory operations, providing a framework for maintaining effective quality management practices and supporting the accuracy, consistency and reliability of laboratory processes.
For GWI, continued compliance with the standard is particularly important given the Water Quality Department's responsibility for monitoring and assessing water quality.
The successful recertification reinforces GWI's commitment to strengthening its laboratory operations and maintaining public confidence in the quality monitoring processes that support water service delivery across Guyana.
